Experimental study of hygrothermal ageing effects on failure modes of non-crimp basalt fibre-reinforced epoxy composite

Turbine blades form the main component for energy generation in renewable technologies such as wind and tidal energy. Non-crimp fabric (NCF) based fibre reinforced composite materials, with E-glass carbon fibres have been widely used materials blades. However, sustainable composites using naturally derived basalt, are being developed to reduce environmental impact. Basalt require no chemical additives, solvents or hazardous production recyclable. little information is available literature on moisture ageing effects failure modes of NCF basalt epoxy composites. Ageing particularly important applications coastal turbine installations, which exposed high humidity. The current study analyses effect flexural, interlaminar shear in-plane properties associated at different stress levels. results showed significant impact flexural stiffness composite, but strength (flexural, shear) demonstrated a reduction following absorption. Similar were observed both dry wet conditions.
